Bird or just a weirdly shaped tree.

Took this over the weekend in central IA. I originally didn’t think much of this pic, but when I zoomed in there is something in the hole that looks like an eye and ear/tuft. Wondering if I’m just staring at it too hard or if there’s actually something in that hole and if so, what is it? Any help is appreciated, thanks!
