I was gifted a Weber Kettle with gas kit

I was gifted this Weber Kettle with a gas kit. it needs some love and I’m very new to grilling. I’m wanting to clean it up and start using it as my beginner grill. I have purchased a natural gas conversion kit to use in my alfresco. I’m wondering what this hole and mesh is responsible for and wondering if it’s safe?
