More directive
Hi! I am a newbie therapist (graduated in August of this year!) and I have reached somewhat of a dilemma in my practice.
I have always been a very non directive therapist. Of course, I provide psycho education and coping skills when necessary. But I truly believe (and was trained to!) that clients are experts of their own lives. I tend to lean towards a more client centered approach with some challenging when I feel rapport is there.
Here is my issue: I am a very avoidant and non confrontational person. Some of my clients have requested that I tell them what I really think and feel, no matter how harsh it sounds. I think I already try to be genuine and honest without providing my opinion.
My question is: how do I achieve this? It feels a very overwhelming task and it is making me rethink my entire style as a therapist.
