Do people actually eat so many eggs that it's a normal metric for the economy?

I know it's sort of a meme at this point, but it feels like it wouldn't be one without some truth to it. I haven't had eggs in 20 years, I don't look at the prices. I am now being familiarized with egg prices due to people sharing photos.

I think, "well, $0.50 seems fair for a small protein ball from a living being," but that seems to equate to an unreasonable price? A protein bar with the same amount (~7g) costs much more than that.

I just didn't know it was such a staple food that it would spark outrage. Obviously people eat them, scrambled eggs or sunny side up is a normal thing, but I imagine that as a weekend, easy morning off thing and not something I'd stress day to day.

Is this something people are plowing through daily?

Edit: Got it, eating eggs like they're going out of style.

Edit 2: I know eggs are in things, it was a question about going and getting a carton.
