Using energy before going to grid

I’m just really curious as to why my home does not use more of the solar energy that it produces before it sends that energy back to the grid? Most of the time I get my bill it shows a very close number in energy that I sent to the grid when compared to what my panels actually produced.Would it not be more beneficial to me for my home to use more of the solar energy versus sending it back to the grid and getting a credit? Considering the cost of using energy from the grid is greater than the credit.
