Jazzmaster Break Angle and Shimming
I have a MIJ Jazzmaster. When it arrived the bridge rattled a ton and I got it set up and as a result they shimmed it a decent amount (used a 1* StewMac shim). It came with the vintage style bridge and I understand the need for some break angle to keep the strings in the very unpronounced grooves.
I did not realize upon buying a JM that bridges and vibratos would become an obsession. Right now I have an AmPro style bridge in there and I just received a Halon bridge that I am pretty excited about. With the shim, the bridge and pickups are exceptionally high, though play well. I always hear break angle being important, but I am curious what angle is ideal and how you solve for that. I would imagine bridge type and sting gauge matter, but what is the rule of thumb on what I’m solving for?
