Are the ladies in this group still called "sister"?

We were in the NICU for 5 weeks for our prem twins, and my mother was constantly calling the the nurses "sister" and I found it hilarious. I really thought that died out with the 160 year old nuns at the Catholic hospital I was born at, 40 years ago. Am I wrong?
