VPP Subscriptions Incoming?
Given that both Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro for iPadOS will require subscriptions to work, Apple will either need to implement 'VPP Subscriptions' (very potentially with WWDC and iOS 17 just around the corner) or otherwise provide a one-time paid alternative to those apps that only exist in ASM and ABM. I cannot see the latter being the case, somehow, as it's not something Apple have done before. Then again, nor is subscription-based pricing for pro apps... so I guess we're in uncharted territory all around! I'm not against the subscription pricing at all, as a heavy user of both apps for a long time, but that's another post for another day.
I then got to thinking about how they could do this, using device-based licensing. It's possible that, because most customers will have a payment card registered in ABM/ASM, direct monthly billing could be done (like it is for Apple Business Essentials in the US) and then iOS/macOS plus the MDM could have a mechanic whereby the app 'phones home' to check that the licence is still active - much like how Xbox consoles handle games licensed with Game Pass membership.
If payment fails to be made on the monthly date, a 14-day grace period exists. After that, the MDM tells the app that it isn't licensed and the app prompts for an Apple ID to open - like how apps do now if you don't have device licences for them but deploy them anyway. ASM/ABM can also then have a new 'Subscriptions' area in the sidebar that lists any organisational apps that you have subscribed to. Again, we've kind of seen something similar with the 'Sign In with Apple' management area and how that's laid out.
What do we think, fellow Apple admins?
