Can Rheumatologist prescribe pain meds?

I ask because I recently had a flare put me in the hospital. I couldn't walk and was in so much pain, swelling in legs, pleurisy. I asked my rheumatologist who I'm doing a lupus case study with could they give me something to avoid pain. I teach school and want to make it to the end of the year - which is soon ending. I only need the pills when needed. Not everyday I'm in pain. They told me to take a Prednisone or to take a regular Tylenol. Then I said muscle relaxer? They said Nope.

I don't take my pain meds often. I literally have to be in so much pain. I had one bottle of Tylenol 3 that lasted me 4 years from primary doctor, they was turning yellow. They came white. I don't take them like that. Just asking them felt wrong. They wrote me my plaquenil, Prednisone and Imuran.
