How do I keep my previous salaries from showing up on background checks?
I've worked several jobs in my career (in the US, Ohio), and EVERY SINGLE one has only offered me $1.00/hour more than my previous job when hiring me. It goes like this: the job listing posts one salary, then at the first interview they give a lower salary range than the job listing (which is shady, but not unheard of) then after the background check when the offer comes it's always only $1.00 more per hour than my previous position. I thought I was going crazy, as this exact increment kept happening and I never disclose my previous pay to future employers. But I now work in the HR office in my new role (not a part of HR I just overhear everything they say to each other), and they quite openly discuss this step in the hiring process as something that's common practice when discussing job offers for potential employees. They get this information from the background check, NOT from the employee disclosing their pay voluntarily. How do I keep this specific information private from my background checks so it stops happening to me?
