Anyone intentionally move away from boutique pedals?
Getting into guitar and pedals, I fell into the very similar pattern of many where I was constantly checking out new pedals, especially those of artists I wanted to sound like via things like Equipboard and YouTube Rig Rundown videos. This resulted in a lot of money spent across Reverb on used pedals and some on new pedals from other retailers. I ended up with a decent little collection of mostly boutique pedals, but as of recent as I’ve been playing more with a band, my focus and interest has been to making do with less and getting more out of utilitarian pedals like standard TS9, RAT, Boss, etc…basically returning to the most common types of pedals that may not be the sexiest (except the RAT) but get the job done. I’ve kept a few nicer pedals, namely delay and EQ and sold a ton of my others, and I’m now fascinated with doing more with less/stretching common pedals to their limits.
I’m sure this is not a unique sentiment. Who has some stories about their mindset around this? I know it’s probably cyclical and I’ll be back to collecting more eclectic pedals, but that’s part of the fun of being a person who enjoys gear I suppose.
