Is Jonas a bad judge of character? (BOTNS Spoilers)

Was thinking about Jolenta last night before bed. (No that's not what I mean!)

I was thinking about how Dr. Talos cast a glamour on a lowly, ignorant serving wench, and the spell really worked. I don't doubt that she appeared to be 'The Most Beautiful Woman in the World' to those who looked on her - Dorcas, Severian, and some others say as much.

However, we know that even if Severian couldn't dispel the charm of her appearance from his eyes, in his heart he was for Dorcas. He recognized Jolenta's middling personality obscured by the glamour; that she was lazy, selfish, vain, ignorant to degrees.

For Sev, she was good for a roll in the hay (read: boat) but not much more than that. He seems annoyed by her elsewhere (although in the end, he has compassion for her).

Why then is Jonas so bamboozled as to fall head-over-heels in love? Jonas has seen a whole lot of the universe, and lived a good long time. Shouldn't he be a better judge of character? What did he see in her, other than her appearance? Is Wolfe having a little laugh at the irony of it?

Curious if anybody has thoughts, or can answer that question: "Did Jonas see anything other than her physical appearance to make him love her? If so, what?"
