What are the best modern games that include time travel or time manipulation in some way?
I just replayed Bioshock Infinite and remembered how much I actually like time travel shenanigans when they’re done right either as part of the story or as a core gameplay gimmick like in the older Prince of Persia games. To my knowledge, the last one is just a platformer that doesn’t have the sands of time feature (didn’t play it, correct me if I’m wrong). I loved playing games like Time Shift, Second Sight… and the Legacy of Cain games, as they also had a sort of overlapping play across different timelines. Not time travel per se (dat too though) but it comes close to the theme/story vibe I’m looking for.
It’s got me wondering, what are some more recent games - say last 5-6 years - that implement time travel in a really neat way that just clicks with the setting or is in some way mechanically integrated into the core gameplay. Haven’t seen many if I’m being honest, flashback sequences seem to be way more popular when it comes to storytelling. The last (relatively) recent game game I remember playing that had this sort of time-travel dynamic in the story at least is Last Epoch, and it was fun for at least keeping the zones and enemy variety interesting + the obvious story flavor that it adds to each playthrough. Plus, it kind of makes sense for the endgame loop of “fixing broken timelines” without it being dissonant.
I’m not particular on the genre either, I just haven’t had much experience with puzzlers/ mystery solving games since up till this year I’ve been PC-only. Prefer RPGs and FPS with rpg-lite elements and some sort of decision making and upgrade/build system. But I’m also up for anything RTS/TBS or others if you now of an undercooked gem that deserves to be played.
Cheers!
