What is your age and why are you learning Spanish?

sorry to sound noisy...I'm just curious as to what motivates people spend 1000 hours of their (assumingly) busy lives to learn a new language.

I'm 50 and a Canadian who usually spends 1 month a year in Mexico for vacation. I really just want to be able to go down and have fun, lite conversations and jokes with the staff of my resort. At times I wonder whether spending 1000 hours of my life is an intelligent trade off to do this. It got me wondering what makes others sacrifice their time and what they will do w the language once at a useful level. Good luck to all and thanks.
