Can you please share your life experience and opinion on my current time sensitive career decision?
Time sensitive need advice quickly
Indecisive on job opportunities. Time sensitive. Please help
Hello everyone. I can’t decide for the life of me and I understand it is a personal decision but I could definitely use some guidance, experience, and advice. I’m 34. 5 kids. Tired of construction trades been a carpenter been a iuoe operator moneys good but I want to pursue a career in IT for reasons that include I’m a wiz at it, I’ve been at it since a kid, I enjoy it, I love it, I excel at it without effort, lucrative six figure salaries with remote work down the road.
So..
I’m enrolled this fall at WGU for my bachelors in CS. I’m really leaning towards programming but Cybersecurity is not off the table. For shits and giggles I took the Comptia ITF+ and passed with no studying. Working on an A+. Why? Well I think I’d be a lot happier in life and passionate about work doing something I truly do enjoy, which is being on and aspects of computers systems.
So I put together a resume during a long layoff as an operator where I was making $30 a hour. I am offered an IT Help Desk role at a hospital starting at $17 an hour. Drastic pay cut for sure. I’m like okay let’s do this I really think I’ll enjoy everything about it. Company is solid, staff and management was such a positive vibe. They want me to start 9/16. Today I get a call from the laborers union to get started as a journeyman laborer in 2 days on a nearby solar field for $36.40/hr. 5 10’s and a 8 on Saturday. So, $600 a week vs $2000 a week after my little exempt deductions. I could use the extra money short term. It’s not NECESSARY. I’m not drowning in bills or debt things are paid for i have a small cushion although i could acquire a few things where the money would help out.. taking the IT role would have me scraping by until i could get moved up which alone is possible with just obtaining my A+
The IT company has tier 2 help desk for $20. Hires salary for system admins and network admins. So there’s room growth. None of it’s really necessary for a career as software engineer, but would be crucial stepping stones for security roles.
Work a low paying IT job and have job satisfaction while finishing school and learning to program. Orrr work a high paying job I hate but can tolerate while finishing school and learning to program and be happy with an instantly better financial situation and being able to acquire some things. My mind tells me money and my heart tells me the help desk. I cannot come to a sound decision. I’m leaving this one up to the Reddit majority. lol. Thanks
