What were your experiences with IV pain meds?

Preparing for baby #5 of all things, and I’ve never looked into IV pain meds. I only hear about epidurals being the wonder of all options, or the only alternative pain relief being natural (water, combs, breathing, hypnosis) So tell me, what was your experience with IV medication? Why did you choose it? Why not? Are you happy with that choice? Did you have side effects you didn’t expect or wouldn’t want again? Thanks in advance!
