What’s the strategic reason for holding fire till the enemy line gets close?

Like in films, whether it’s modern warfare or old medieval battles you always have a general shouting “hooooold!” While the enemy advances before finally giving the order to open fire, the battle of helms deep and Braveheart springs to mind but there’s likely lots of other examples.
