Is Research Discovery Program worth it

Im a freshman and I got accepted, but I dont know if it's worth it since you don't do any research and thinking it might be better to just apply for research positions. Has anyone gotten a research position as a freshman? If it's super hard to get a research role, then I might just enroll in the program to prepare me for next year.
