Jake Roberts is the greatest wrestling psychologist in history
Roberts came across as a very intimidating figure, despite not having a superstar's body, which was essentially mandatory during that time. His move set consisted of about only 4 moves, including the DDT, yet during his matches I never noticed how empty his in-ring repertoire truly was. His promos also stood out, as almost everyone in this era shouted and acted over the top. Jake, though, was eloquent, heartless and calculated, never relying on catchphrases or insulting the crowd. All of these factors contributed to him getting over and the crowd forcing WWF to turn him babyface, but what about the subtle things?
- Jake always had long hair, that he started losing even back in Georgia days. So why did he never cut it or shave it completely? Because eventually, the top of his head got so bad it resembled a cobra's hood. He was that committed to the character, and I firmly believe this was done on purpose.
- his moustache was super thick, begging the question - why did he never grow his beard out fully then? Not a lot of wrestlers had beards back in those days, so it would have made Jake stand out even more. Besides, moustaches were a trend during the 80's among the general public and wrestlers, so naturally, it made Jake appear more common, right? Well, no, because Jake let it grow out all the way down to his chin, then shaving the rest off. The final product - moustache resembling snake fangs, so yet another subtle detail to the character.
- his slithering to and out of the ring, "rise up" after sitting in the corner like a cobra and his cold stares would be some obvious examples of him implementing the Snake aspect to the character. However, what about his outside the ring attires? A lot of wrestlers nowadays, I believe, do not have a specific style in correlation to their character, and it kills their presentation, making them appear.. normal. Jake wore snake-skin clothes, dangling earrings, flashy dress shirts and run-down suits with nothing underneath, making him appear even more intimidating yet somehow still every-day looking. He was that one dangerous guy in a bar that you definitely wouldn't mess with.
- Jake had 3 different snake species that symbolized three arcs of his character - Damien was his anti hero phase, Lucifer was his most devilish period, and Revelations was there when he became a man of God. The snakes all looked different and operated differently, because Jake himself operated and looked differently. With Damien he was at his leanest and best looking, with lighter attires. With Lucifer he got heavier, wore darker clothes and grew his 'stache even longer. With Revelations he was out of shape and wore THE lightest colors to date.
- many people don't realize the depth of Jake's character, but if you analyze all the points above, the announcers' comments, Jake's promos, and the very mysterious EL DIABLO name he used in AAA, you'll realize Jake wasn't meant to just be an intelligent and creepy dude that liked snakes. Jake Roberts' character was supposed to be literally Devil on earth, or to be specific The Devil in human (Jake) and animal (Damien, Lucifer and Revelations) form simultaneously.
Unlike Kevin Sullivan, The Undertaker, Malakai Black and many others, Jake didn't need to paint his face, flash Satanic symbols, dress creepily or speak in metaphors - he, much like Devil himself would, hid what he really was under a carefully constructed veil. Charismatic, seductive, smart, flashy and deadly - The Snake was hell in human form. Trust me.
