How long is too long to tuck?

At what point do you go back to doing something else? What's the longest you've stayed on someone's ship without them noticing? I had an interaction yesterday where I was hiding up in the crows nest on a sloop and waited up there for around 20 mins. What's the best way to turn in their loot without your ship?
