Barrio República safety

Hello! I'm a fellow European planning to spend three months studying in Chile. I've noticed a growing number of Reddit posts and online warnings about security concerns in the country, which is unfamiliar territory for me as someone from Europe. I initially planned to stay in Barrio República since it's very close to the university—just a 4-5 minute walk. However, my supervisor recommended I consider moving to Providencia instead after acknowledging where I was planning to stay. I've already booked an apartment in República, but I can still cancel it if necessary, for free. How unsafe is República really? Would it be a better idea to relocate? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
