Panicking about how much I HAVEN’T saved
I only just under $10k across my TFSA, Weslthsimple accounts, and RRSP and I’m about to turn 30. I panicked recently and did a calculation of how much I’ve earned since January 2019 and when I first started paying rent. I earned just under $210k after taxes, in lieu of (when I was on contract in government), CPP, EI, union dues and pension altogether. I calculated I’ve paid $67K in rent since that time and another whooping $7.5K in TTC monthly metro passes. Where has all my other money gone??? I’ve taken a few trips here and there, maybe $20k in total but I’m so embarrassed. I haven’t bought any super expensive clothes or handbags or shoes, have no student loan debt, always paid off my credit cards, don’t own a car. I also am trying it utilize credit card points, casback, taking surveys online and uploading receipts for gift cards.
I’m embarrassed that the rest has gone to Ubers, eating out, drinks, alcohol. Like, it’s incredibly sad especially with how awful housing is going.
I’m thinking about moving back home and hunkering down and throwing all my money into savings to beef it up. I’m just embarrassed my friends and family will find out and I’ll be seen as a failure. Especially since a lot of them stayed home and maxed out their TFSAs and RRSPs and are talking about buying a house (especially in Toronto).
I’m owed some back pay from Bill 124 (I work for the ON gov), I filled my taxes after many years of not and I am getting this years and past tax returns, OTB, CCR and GST/HST.
Anyone else in a similar situation? Anyone got advice on how to beef up savings more?
