Are statistics important in this game?

I am a new player and I wonder if anyone cares what my match statistic is. Sometimes I just jump out of the plane to fight directly, normally I die soon afterwards. If I try to survive as long as possible I am normally under the bst 10 players. But it is not so much fun all the time. So are the stats where you are placed in the ranking important somehow or what is it about?
