Optimism vs. Realism
I’m sure everyone is confused at the influx of “MAGA is waking up” posts that have dominated this sub for the past week. This is highly suspicious and I don’t think this is the case, based on observation as well as my personal experience. I live in a diverse area with people from all walks of life and have friends on all parts of the political spectrum, so I feel like I’m qualified to speak up.
Indeed, some conservatives are waking up. A couple of my conservative friends (they’re mostly old-school right-wingers conservatives) are growing dissatisfied and extremely critical of Trump and Elon, but this is by no means the majority. Most of the Republicans I know are at most ashamed or apathetic of what’s happening, and many still maintain support. As for MAGA, tough luck. There are a good chunk of very vocal MAGA folks where I am, and none of them seem to be realizing what’s going on.
I do believe there to be value in talking to conservatives and getting them to realize the bigger picture (since what we’re experiencing transcends political boundaries), but I would personally be extremely cautious of everything and anything I see on this sub. MAGA supporters will likely never question anything until it directly affects them in an extremely harsh or negative way.
There is a lot of work to be done, and much of the “optimism” on here does nothing but make us more complacent and comfortable. I encourage you all to not seek the false comfort on this subreddit anymore and instead follow reputable voices on Substack, Bluesky, and other outlets if you want realistic news and ways to mobilize legitimately while doing the work of talking to people in your real life circles.
