Why does the ring go on the left hand?

I recently realised that the ring goes on the left hand and not right. I found this surprising given the importance of the right hand from a religious point of view, I was always taught that the right hand was the cleaner hand (eat with right, shake hands with the right, write with the right, wipe with the left etc.).

Note: I grew up in a Muslim household so I am not sure if the right hand has the same importance in Christianity
