Under what circumstances do llamas spit at you?

I'm wondering this because i am, righ now, for certain reasons, trying to get some llamas to spit at me in a flat world, but they simply don't. So, does the fact that i started off in creative pre dispose the llamas to not attack me, wether i'm in survival or not?.
