Strange hole in exhaust

I bought an 1986 honda transalp and it has an aftermarket exhaust which is quite loud. I only noticed today that it has a perfect hole further down the exhaust. I'm going to get something to patch it, but I wanted to ask if this has a purpose other than to make noise?
