Fascinating little tidbit I read in Tommy Motorola's memoir...
Did you guys know that Tommy considers Mariah's infamous 1996 Grammy night...the night she was nominated for everything and won nothing...as the final straw of their relationship? Not only was she expecting to win because Daydream was a tour de force and her best album to-date at that point in her career, but because he practically guaranteed it to her. I would've been beyond pissed too.
What I found fascinating though was shortly after that night Tommy left Mariah a breakup note on the nightstand with lyrics to an Elton John song that read: “Butterflies are free to fly/Fly away…” The next year she adopted the Butterfly as her spirit animal, named her album "Butterfly", and wrote two songs on the album both with the name "Butterfly" in their title.
Not only that, but slayed the gworls and the charts using the breakup note as inspiration! Petty Queen! That's how you flip a negative into a positive. Not only did she basically use his breakup note as fuel to her fire and success, but she wrote a whole song about someone else's CUM, made it the first song on the album, chose it as the lead single and watched it debut in the pole position -- basically telling Tommy to "fly away on DEEEZ" lol. I just love that once the writing was on the wall she checked out and got the fuck out! WORK!
Lastly, continuing with her way of spilling tea that we didn't even realize was spilt...Mariah always explained the song "Butterfly" as something she wished Tommy would have said to her. If we are to take his account as factual, then I love that she bascially told us this years ago without telling us. She probably didn't want to rock the boat or piss him off (he was still her boss at the time) so she told us how they're relationship ended the best way she could, by making it a hypothetical scenario when it actuality it's what really happened. Her mind >>>
