Unpopular opinion: It's not necessary to choose 4K SDR over Dolby Vision on Apple TV clients
I've seen countless recommendations here and elsewhere to set Apple TV settings to 4K SDR. The conventional reason for this is to not force SDR content to be presented as Dolby Vision, which some suggest will ruin the color accuracy. However, when "match dynamic range" is enabled in ATV settings, SDR content is delivered as SDR regardless of whether Dolby Vision is enabled. This behavior can be confirmed by calling up the "VRR Information" window (pressing the green button 5 times quickly) and switching between SDR, HDR, and Dolby Vision content. If the Apple TV is set to output 4K SDR it will switch to Dolby Vision when necessary, and when it is set to output Dolby Vision, the Apple TV will switch to SDR when necessary.
You might experience fewer screen blackouts during dynamic range switching if you enable 4K SDR because most content is in SDR. However, the claim that enabling Dolby Vision will augment SDR content doesn't appear to hold true.
What am I missing here?
