Flames sometimes come out from the back of the flat top? Is it normal or no?

So I could find a good picture online, but in the back there's like a gap and that occasionally lights up for like a second and then stops.

Is it dangerous? It is dirty so I'm assuming something just catches in fire. What causes it, and what is that part called ?
