New player here, and im confused

What am i supposed to be doing? Im currently killing skeletons to get a higher combat level to buy better armor, i cant kill spiders cause they Deal too much damage, but then i have no money to but Said better armor, How AM i supposed to earn money? Selling ores? But i cant find a way to smelt them, i cant place a furnace anywhere, what am i supposed to be doing?
