Transfer Gold to Gems now or wait?

I plan on buying an item during the march sale if the item goes on sale. I am going to need to turn some gold into gems to afford the item. My question is, are gems cheaper now, or would they be cheaper closer to the march sale, or perhaps it is just random and doesn't matter.

Is there anyone here who has actually looked into this and can answer?
