What's an American thing you were surprised to find out is real?

So everyone seen the "what's a thing in harry potter, you thought was magic but turns out is just British" question before.

But I was wondering about the inverse. What's a thing you assumed just existed for plot convenience or audience short hand in TV but is actually a real American thing?
