In fiction, there is a trope when EMPs from nukes fry all the satellites and/or computers, but not harm humans. Is this physically realistic?

Or would any nuke-caused EMP strong enough to massively fry electronics, also be strong enough to kill humans, either from the EMP itself (e.g. mess with the electric heart of brain rhythms), or from the other destructive effects of the underlying nuke?
