Appropriate question or not?

So my company just pulled everyone into a big meeting to announce they were laying people off and also restructuring the teams.

A few minutes later our head person (who has been here a month btw) who was giving the announcement asked if there were any questions.

So I asked, how many people were laid off?

Her response to me was that it was an inappropriate question. Immediately my blood went up because I was basically being chastised in front of 100 people.

So I said why is that an inappropriate question? And her reply was because she felt uncomfortable answering. So I said ok then don't answer it I guess.

I was kind of dumbfounded and more than a little pissed off. I couldn't wrap my head around how my question was inappropriate. And not only that she could have just responded with something like we're not sharing that information right now etc etc.

Took all my will power not to tell her to fuck off.
