What does it look like to have a sponsor?

And how do you go about it? Are there set people who are sponsors? Or just anyone? Do you ask the person? And do you have to meet in person or do you do phone calls or text? And how do you even really “work the steps”? Do you just talk about them? Should I read Alanon Works? And are the steps in there?
