What Was It Like Being At Airports And Flying Immediately After 9/11?
I fell into the 9/11 rabbit hole last weekend and have a lot of context about what went down but what I haven’t seen discussed is the aftermath in terms of airports and flying immediately after. I’m not talking about stuff like TSA being implemented.
From what I understand not too long after the incident happened the FAA issued a no-fly zone to the entire country. How long after 9/11 was this lifted? The day after? Days? Weeks?
What were airports like when flights were allowed again? Were they empty? Was the “energy” tense? Hostile? Were people being thoroughly checked and searched?
How did people react to seeing Muslims in the airports or people of Arab descent? How about when they were on planes?
How about being on actual flights? Were you scared? Did you leave any special messages for your loved ones before you boarded? Did turbulence get to you? Were you extra nice to the pilots? Did you clap for the pilots when landing (I know people still do that on rough flights sometimes nowadays lol).
For context I was 6 when 9/11 happened. I remember my teacher breaking the news to the class about 9/11 and watching the news at my baby sitter’s house when she picked me up from school but I don’t have the context to see how the country changed on a macro level since I was so young.
